QUT may not boast a Latin motto, but we have a tagline that’s well-known among the student community: “The university for the real world”. While not all students might be aware of this, in my circles, almost every graduate has heard of it. Interestingly, when I asked several UQ graduates about their motto in an unscientific poll, none could give me a reply.

In addition to our tagline, QUT also has a mission statement: “We’re creating the innovators and the entrepreneurs of the future who can identify, act on and realise opportunities to create value for others.” From my personal experience, QUT truly embodies this in its operations. The university places a heavy emphasis on innovation and the practical application of technology. Some courses are even offered jointly with tech firms, providing invaluable hands-on experience to students like me. Moreover, some classmates with exceptional performance in certain subjects found employment directly with these firms.

Consider this, as university students, we’re already adults. The influence of a school motto can be minimal, if at all. Unlike the bygone eras where universities had a collegiate culture and mottos bore greater significance, today’s university life is vastly different. Many Australian students juggle part-time jobs to support themselves and the advent of online classes due to COVID-19 has changed the dynamic further. Plus, Australian university education is one of the country’s major sources of foreign exchange revenue, and from my experience at UQ and QUT, it’s a fairly commercialised environment.

Secondly, each Australian university has its unique strengths. If you judge based solely on university reputation and ranking, your perspective might be incomplete. Employers in Australia typically consider a graduate’s GPA more than their alma mater.

Thirdly, unless you’re considering a research career, it might be more beneficial to consider the employment rate of the university’s graduates. After all, university is the stepping stone to self-reliance; we must consider our future livelihoods without depending on family or the government.

Fourthly, based on my experience, if you’re pursuing coursework, the content offered by mainstream universities tends to be quite similar. I noticed comparable curricula when I compared my studies with those of my peers at Griffith University and UQ.

Lastly, as commercial entities, both UQ and QUT desire top-notch students to elevate their reputation, as fame makes things easier. Hence, they both organise many marketing events.
